About Apocalypse Design

Owners

Apocalypse Design co-owners Tyson and Davya Flaharty were both born and raised in Fairbanks. Together, they have two children and co-run the family business bringing their experiences to the brand.

Tyson

Tyson is the son of the founder of Apocalypse Design, Dick Flaharty. From a young age Dick took Tyson on every adventure imaginable, including the Chilkoot Trail, camping in the Alaska Range, ice-caving inside glaciers and being pulled behind a snowmachine on skis for weekends at a time, just to name a few. In college, Tyson xc skied competitively and internationally for University of Alaska, Fairbanks followed by Alaska Pacific University. After 2014, his athleticism turned to the bike and is a renowned endurance cyclist specializing in winter ultra-distances. He has secured multiple victories in the Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI), one of the most demanding winter ultramarathons globally.

Davya

Davya is the daughter of Bob and Sharon Baker and quite the multifaceted individual. Growing up in an athletic family she volunteered and raced in many running, xc skiing and triathlon events and naturally became an accomplished athlete. She competed in xc skiing and running for the University of Alaska Anchorage while obtaining a BA in Art. Marathons became her passion after college and qualified for the Boston and New York City Marathons. Also a musician, Davya collaborates with other singer-songwriters and has two duet albums, Love Only Grows and The Dawn of Love: A Christmas Album.

Origins and Our Name

When Dick Flaharty founded this custom outdoor gear and clothing company in 1983, he named it Apocalypse Design after the Apocalypse, a formidable, 9,000 foot peak in Alaska’s remote Revelation Mountains. The peak was unclimbed when its rugged rock walls caught Dick’s eye on a winter expedition. It remained unclimbed for three decades, until Alaskan alpinists Clint Helander and Jason Stuckey summited Apocalypse in April 2013 by a bold route they named “A Cold Day in Hell”.
